Castle Bagging
Public Group active 6 months, 4 weeks agoA group dedicated to ‘Bagging’ as many of the 3,000+ Castles in Scotland. Starting with Edinburgh Castle is great but we’re looking to reward the Baggers who go for the unusual, the Castles off the beaten track and even the ones we don’t yet know about. They’re definitely out there! Let us know your favourites and let us know your holiday stories relating to to them.

Castle Bagging 2012/10/29 6:42 pmOne of our favourite castles is Caerlaverock, just outside Dumfries. Not that many people know there are actually traces of the medieval castle in Dumfries itself, near to the Crichton, while just up the road from us is the Mote of Urr – apparently one of the largest (but possibly least known!) remains of a Norman Motte & Bailey castle in…[Read more]

Castle Bagging: 2011/03/30 8:16 pmSanquhar Castle – a “romantic” ruin now, but once an impressive Castle where James VI stayed on his way to Dumfries. Originally built by the Crichtons, passed to Sir William Douglas in1639. He liked Sanquhar Castle, to the extent that after having spent one night in his new castle at Dumlanrig, he moved back to Sanquhar where he stayed till he…[Read more]

Castle Bagging: 2011/03/23 1:45 pmI’ve bagged a few castles over the years… some of the well known ones will be obvious (Edinburgh, Stirling, even Eilean “the fake castle” Donan), but others possibly less so (sometimes because there’s little, if at times anything, left)! The most recent castle I visited was Torwood, a short walk from where I stay! Tappoch Broch (which sits…[Read more]

Castle Bagging: 2011/03/21 9:39 pmMorton Castle, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire – dramatic ruin in great scenery. Fairly unkown except by us locals, but worth a visit if you’re in the area for the setting alone.
Owned by Historic Scotland, but free to get in. All you have to do is find it! -

Castle Bagging: 2011/03/21 7:22 pmUrquart Catle on Loch Ness, a cracking ruin and good visual representation on the centre. After the presentation the curtains open with great views to the castle (sorry if I spoilt the ending for you)
Watch out for Nessie when you’re there. -

Castle Bagging: 2011/03/21 7:20 pmMugdock Castle, near Milngavie. There are 2 ruins in the country park, one older than the other. You can walk round one but the other is cordoned off for safety. The newer one was used as a zoo at one point and there are photos of it in the visitor centre, and you can still see where the cages were aginst the rocks just up the path from…[Read more]

Castle Bagging: 2011/03/21 7:17 pmBuchanan castle, near Drymen. Held Rudolph Hess during the war as a prisoner of war when he parachuted in and was captured. Is well hidden and a ruin, but very atmospheric.

Castle Bagging: 2011/03/21 3:50 pmInnis Chonnel Castle – Loch Awe
Innis Chonnel Castle is a small ruin of, reportedly, one of the earliest Campbell strongholds, dating from as early as 1308. It is located on the north east of Loch Awe, near the village of Dalavich. It is only reachable by boat (which, if your visiting can be hired from the Dalavich…[Read more]-

BRILLIANT. Just what we’re after, not the usual Castles (although they can be nice too). Great bit of Castle Bagging!

That’s a mighty fun looking castle – it has been duly placed on my ’to-do’ list – with a high priority tag!

If you do decide to go, here’s the entrance slipway
It’s a great wee island to do some camping on, there’s a large clearing right in the centre of the island, literally 20 feet from the castle which is perfect for camping. There’s also a massive fireplace in the…[Read more]
