A bunch of us had a top class night recently at The Grand Ole Opry, Paisley Road West, Glasgow. If you don’t know it, it’s a country n western live music club. The joint has been around since the 70′s, celebrating country music and stylised Americana (Including fast-draw contests!). A really friendly crew goes there and the drinks are at…[Read more]

    Emma Louise hi
If I can make it along when there’s a next one, I’ll certainly be there. I was sorry I had to leave last week’s event early, ’cos of work. It was all very jolly and friendly. (Maybe too jolly – ’cos I turned up to do a gig with a couple of those Finnieston whisky cocktails in my bloodstream. Oh well! Live and learn!)

Took part in ”The Big Strip” attempt at breaking the world record for dancing Strip The Willow, in July. Did we make it? Was it humiliating that in our group of eight that a kind Englishman and his Scandinavian partner had to remind me and Maureen of the steps?
Maureen found it tricky ’cos she’s Irish and their country dancing denies the use of arms.

To all the Bagging Scotland people: I’m putting out a bugle call.

We have a member called Xenia Schiller, who is from the USA and who is shortly gonna touch down in our country to spend a year doing a post-grad at Glasgow University.

Accommodation is a concern for Xeni. If any of the troops who inhabit this site can give her advice, guidance,…[Read more]

    • Much appreciated!!!
      Xeni

      • Hi Xeni – have you organised a place to stay yet? Do you have an arrival date booked? I could send out the word amongst my friends – they’re always moving flat! There’s also this wee shop on Byres Road (west end) that has lots of mini-card adverts in the window – it semi-famous amongst flat seekers – i could take a photo of it for you and you…[Read more]

  • July 2011. A shot from Kilmun, near Dunoon. Looking from the doorstep of my friend's cottage, I saw the evening rush hour on The Holy Loch get chaotic.

Storms and winds at the end of May. Trees bending at the start of Summer. You got to love this demented country. We don’t give a f*** about logic.

  • Hehe. Your description of your dad reminds me of the Oor Wullie strip in the Sunday Post where, it seemed, every eight weeks, Hank the Yank would stroll through town wearing a stetson and a camera and Wullie would take him back to ma’s for mince n tatties. Loved Hank the Yank – loved Wullie’s [...]

  • Alright. Let’s settle this ” back of four” thing. I tell my friend I’ll be there about the back of four. He understands that I’ll show up anytime between five past four and thirty five minutes after four. If I arrive anytime after that (but before 5pm) he is entitled to grumble. Such grumbling is, [...]

Light bulbs. Nice one, fellas, for distilling yet another moment of MOD stupidity. £22 for a light bulb. I’ll mention the submarine HMS Astute. The latest, greatest and stealthiest. £1.2bn for an amphibious tube designed to slide under the oceans to try to try to locate other amphibious tubes. And which crashed into the Isle [...]

Oh, come on guys – with respect, the question is kinda loaded: you only gave us 6 options for Scotland’s best regional food. For what it’s worth, the tikka masala and the cullen skink depend on where you buy it, the Arbroath Smokie is an over-rated and hugely intricate collection of thin bones with some [...]

  • Well said, Victor. I’m all for using humour to try to puncture the bigots balloon but, as you imply, it will be difficult and it will take a lot of time. On a personal note, I did a routine at a comedy club – an anecdote about a real event – which illuminated the ridiculous [...]

Friends and I stayed at the Boat House in Rothesay recently. Outstanding B&B with a touch of class and style. Love to the owner, Paul, and his family.

  • Isle of Bute. The Boat House. Stylish, clean, cosy, top class food in the morning, run by friendly, cool people. Great views across the water. I highly recommend this place.
