Hey! I’m staying at the uni for 10 days when I get there (8/23). Thank you for putting the word out. Looking for a place that is pet-friendly as my dog will join me in Sept. That would be great if you could take a pic of the Byres road adverts! Thanks so much for the help!

Hey Dave. I’m a graduate student going to GU. Is Southside far from campus? City Centre is in East End? I did not realize that. I am terrible with maps and also it’s hard to see where the different areas start/end. There are some really cute flats in Dennistoun but I am really leery about East End. (Red Road and all that.) Thanks much for all the info!

Thanks Dave. I am very excited about Glasgow. It’s hard to search from here, and the site the school refers me to is for flat shares. I wanted West End but it looks pretty expensive. Not sure what else is close to school and safe. There was a flat in my saved list in Govanhill, LOL. Thanks! Will remove it. I am confused about the tenement thing.…[Read more]

Hey y’all. Does anyone have any good inside tips for flat hunting online? Sites and such? Things to watch out for? Neighborhoods to avoid (Headed to Glasgow.) I love this one area I’ve been looking at for months, but last night found out it was in the East End. So…. I’m looking from Alabama. Be up in Aug/Sept (!) for school, looks like. Any…[Read more]

That’s so funny to me about the eggs. We have white and brown in our ‘Bama markets. One less culture shock for me! I’ll be there [...]

Love it. Those guys in kilts are awesome (and by awesome, I mean, I agree with you – cringe-worthy. In a really fun way.) For some reason, those back up dancers remind me of our 80’s band, Living Color, but with way less anger and angst.

  • This was so funny. I love the part about the lattes. God love em. Are you in Scotland for school or work?
And…what color are the eggs?? (I don’t like surprises.)

I finally found Gregory’s Girl on You Tube! Really hard to find anywhere else – here anyway. I can’t wait to get there with all that unrestricted access. I haven’t watched American Tv in a year. Everything is British cinema via Netflix or BBC iplayer or Radio Scotland. Y’all Scots have ruined me for my own country. :)

Hey Jules. Thanks for the tip on Alasdair Gray. I will have to watch for him when I get out there. I’m going to grab some of his books. I haven’t seen Hallam Foe or Shallow Grave yet. I will add them to the queue if I can. If you think of any others, you know where to find me! :)

Hey y’all. I need advice and suggestions! I’m moving to Glasgow (from Alabama) come September to go to GU. It’s probably going to be a bit of a culture shock, so I’ve been doing a bit of “virtual bagging” in preparation.

    • Hi Xeni, It’s a tough call knowing what to suggest literature wise as the possibilities are endless. Off the top of my head I would suggest Lanark by Alasdair Gray not just because it is considered a twentieth century masterpiece but because you are highly likely to bump into the Alasdair himself in your wanderings around the periphery of Glasgow…[Read more]

For Scottish movies, I’d recommend three, Gregory’s Girl. The Illusiionist and The 39 Steps, the original Hitchcock one!

@josephine sherwood Hey cute profile pic. I do love Skye, but I have no right to since I’ve not ever given it the courtesy of a visit. BUT I am hoping to move to Scotland in September to go to Univ of Glasgow, so I will have a year to atone for it. I take it you’ve been? I hope you’re posting pics!
